What is HospitalAdvisor?
HospitalAdvisor is an independent web based platform for patients and their families in Hong Kong. It can be found on www.hopsitaladvisor.org.hk and it is free of charge for all users.
It covers all 42 public hospitals and 11 private hospitals.
The website is in three languages, English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.
What is the aim of HospitalAdvisor?
HospitalAdvisor has two main aims. Firstly, to empower patients with information and secondly, to celebrate those hospitals that put patient care at the centre of their service delivery.
- Empowering patients:
Hospital Advisor will help patients decide which hospital to use. Even if a patient has no choice about which hospital to use, we think it helps to know what are the strengths and weaknesses of each hospital.
Hospital Advisor gives a Quality of Care score for each hospital in Hong Kong. HospitalAdvisor will also have a Checklists section for patients so that they know what questions to ask upon admissions and discharge of a hospital.
- Celebrating patient-centred hospitals:
By providing rankings of hospitals, we celebrate those hospitals that put patients at the centre of their service delivery.
How does HospitalAdvisor produce the Quality of Care score?
HospitalAdvisor receives information about quality of care from patients.
We ask patients who have been in hospital to fill in a survey, and based on their responses, a Quality of Care score will be generated for that hospital and that specialty.
The survey questions asked to patients are very specific and any patient can answer them.
Can we rely on patients to give us specific objective feedback?
Yes, we can.
Research has demonstrated that patients’ experiences are a good proxy for actual quality of care in hospitals. In some countries, patient experience surveys are used to identify problems that exist in the hospital.
